The
therapeutic benefits one can achieve using pure essential oils is far-reaching,
both mentally and physically. Various application methods can be used
to achieve the desired result. Please note that it is recommended that
no essential oil should be applied to the skin without first diluting.
Dilution is normally 2.5% (15 drops of essential oil to one ounce of
carrier oil) but can be inreased to 5% for chronic conditions.
Baths
Add 5-10 drops of oil into a bath of warm water after the water has
settled. Mix it around in the water and relax in the bath for 10-15
minutes. Benefits include relief for muscular aches and pains, skin
disorders, circulation problems, tension, fatigue and insomnia.
Car
Fresheners
Add 2-3 drops of oil on a tissue and place in an air vent inside the
car. Use basil or peppermint to remain alert for long ditances, or
one of the citrus oils to refresh stale air.
Compresses
Add
6 drops of oil in enough water to soak a compress. Soak the compress
and squeeze it until it stops dripping. Apply directly to the affected
area and keep it on for at least two hours (preferably overnight).
Hot
Benefits
include relief from old injuries, sprains, muscular aches, painful
periods, cystitis and skin problems. To help heat retention add
a warmed towel and place a blanket over the towel.
Cold
Use
cold compresses on recent sprains, bruises, swelling and headaches.
To help heat retention add a warmed towel and place a blanket over
the towel. To help cool the compress, place in refrigerator after
soaking.
Diffusion
Aromatic
diffusers can be used to disinfect the atmosphere by releasing droplets
of essential oil as a cool, fine mist. They can also be directed into
the nose, throat or ear passages. If you don't have a diffuser, simply
combine water and essential oils in a spray bottle.
Inhalation
Steam
inhalation is a wonderful method of application for everyone except
people with asthma. The aroma goes straight to the brain while the
therapeutic qualities of the oils breathed in pass from the lungs
to the bloodstream. Add 5-10 drops of oil to 2.5 cups of hot water.
Drape a towel over the head to capture the steam. Inhale the steam
for 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat no more than three times a day. Benefits
include relief of respiratory problems such as colds, coughs and sinus,
as well as tension and headache relief.
Inhalation can also be accomplished by adding 5-8 drops of oil on
a handkerchief or tissue and taking for deep breaths. Perfect for
quick treatments while in bed, at work or while traveling.
Massage
Add
15-30 drops of essential oil to a 2 ounce bottle of the carrier oil
of your choice. Benefits include relaxing and stimulating the mind through
inhalation, stress and tension relief by working on nerve endings and
muscles, healing of skin conditions, improved circulation and skin surface
appearance, and accelaration of waste elimination through the body's
lymphatic system, which cleanses and nourishes the blood.
Room Fresheners
Add 4-5 drops of essential oil and water to a natural tea light diffuser.
As the oil evaporates, its aroma will fill the room. If you don't have
a natural diffuser, mix the oil and water into a dish and place in a
sunny window.
Skin Cream
Add
up to 15 drops of essential oil to unscented cream or lotion. Good for
skin hydration and rejuvination.
