The unusual mushroom-like structures are the result of a parasitic plant that grows on the Jempinis tree deep in the jungles of Indonesia. The parasite vine can destoy the branches as well as the tree if not removed. The sculptor examines the shape of the branch where the parasite is attached and uses his artistic vision to decide what creature should be "released" from the wood. When the parasitic branch reaches the appropriate size and shape, he cuts it from the tree, dries the wood, and employs his imaginative talent to carve his special one-of-a-kind creation. About the artist These chinaberry sculptures are carved by a number of artists from Indonesia. They are members of the wood-carving cooperative headed by Wayan, a third-generation wood carver. Now in his forties, Wayan has been carving since he was 10 years old. These carvers use only handmade chisels and knives to carve out these one-of-a-kind pieces.
